Enhancing the retail experience with touch screens…

These are tough times for high street retailers. Competition from web-based rivals and a general slump in consumer spending has taken its toll on the sector.

However, there’s no reason to give up hope. If you’re determined to ensure that your company enjoys lasting appeal and success, there are options open to you.

The shopper experience

You might not be able to compete with the low prices and convenience of internet retailers, but there are other ways in which you can gain an advantage. The fact is, many people still like the experience of physically stepping into a store and coming into direct and immediate contact with the objects they’re thinking of getting.

By ensuring that your outlets provide consumers with the ultimate in retail experiences, you stand to boost footfall within your stores and encourage repeat custom.

Touch screens

This is where touch screens come in handy. You can use technology like this in various ways within your store to enhance customers’ experiences. For example, you might want to showcase special offers via kiosks. Consumers could browse their options and see what bargains they can access.

You can also use these touch screens to provide people with information about your products, like where in the shop they can find certain items, how much they cost and how many are in stock.

No time like the present

Highlighting the importance of effective retail strategies, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) recently revealed that April was a flat month for shops despite expectations of growth. In its monthly Distributive Trades Survey, the organisation noted that the volume of sales orders was down on the same period a year ago, while stock levels remained above their long-run average relative to expected demand.

Meanwhile, on balance, retailers expected both sales volumes and orders to fall in May. While 27 per cent of the organisations polled expected an increase in sales, 33 per cent anticipated a fall, resulting in a balance of minus six per cent.

Ongoing stagnation

Responding to the findings, chair of the CBI Distributive Trades Survey Panel Barry Williams said: “Retailers were frustrated this month by the on-going stagnation in sales growth. This may be explained in part by the unseasonal weather we suffered, but there is no doubt that high street conditions are tricky with consumers lacking the confidence to go out and spend, as they still feel the pinch in their pocket.”

How to Make the Most of your Available Business Space…

It is fair to say that commercial and industrial premises aren’t as affordable as they once were. Indeed, you will probably be all too aware of this if you run a business that requires a retail outlet, a manufacturing unit or indeed any other type of premises. The simple fact is, space costs money and that is one thing which most businesses these days simply don’t have an abundance of.

So, if you want to keep your property costs to a minimum you need to make sure you keep your square-footage down.

Fortunately, there is one very simply way in which you can minimise the amount of space you need to operate your company successfully – by installing streamlined touchscreen PC devices.

Although touchscreen monitors are still seen by some people as being the preserve of NASA scientists and ‘Star Trek’ characters, they are in fact quite common in the business world. Indeed, innovative touchscreens now play an integral role in a whole range of industry sectors as there are a whole range of options and designs available.

For example, touchscreen devices are perfect in industrial environments as they are supremely robust and are intuitive to use. In addition, these innovative measures can also be used to great effect in retail-based point-of-sale areas and kiosks as they offer great aesthetic appeal as well as invaluable efficiency. In fact, having touchscreen technology can be very beneficial if you operate in the retail industry as consumers are likely to be far more impressed by hi-tech touchscreens than they are by clumsy looking keyboards and mice.

However, it is important to remember that all of these variant designs and applications have one key thing in common – they can lead to a much more effective use of space in constricted environments as they do not require workers to use a keyboard or a mouse to complete their tasks. Therefore investing in superb quality retail or industrial PC touchscreens really can help to ensure your enterprise makes full use of its available space.

As one of the UK’s leading suppliers of high quality touchscreen products we here at Distec are able to offer a wide range of superb devices that can help to make sure your company gets the most out of its allocated square footage.

We have been established as a company for over 20 years and have over 8,000 customers in our database ranging from small & medium size enterprises right through to Blue Chip companies .Therefore you can be sure that you will receive a service which really is the best around when you come to us.

So, if you’d like to find out more about the benefits of touchscreen technology or want to see what we have to offer in greater detail, either take a few moments to have look around the rest of our website or get in touch with our friendly and professional team by going to our ‘Contact Us’ page.

Why your Office should Upgrade to Touch Screen PCs Sooner Rather than Later…

The advent of the Internet and mobile communications has made it possible for people everywhere to access information via a computer anywhere in the world. Of course, the mouse has been the chief method of controlling personal computers since they first became available to consumers back in the 1980s. However, the reliance on the mouse has dwindled in recent years as the development of touch screen technologies has changed the way many users now access digital information.

Touch Screen Technology

Touch screens are found in a whole range of personal digital devices these days, from mobile phones and tablet PCs to mp3 players and printers. They are also an increasingly common sight in commercial environments such as airports, train stations and supermarkets. The reason this technology is becoming more and more common is that people intrinsically find touch screen devices very easy to use. This can be seen in the fact that even very small children are able to use their parents’ iPhones and iPads without being shown what to do.

Despite this however, it is fair to say that touch screen computers have been a little bit slower to catch on than the aforementioned devices. Indeed, most office environments still have traditional desktop computers (with monitors, keyboards and mice) sitting in them.

Given the way things have been going in the past five years though, all this may well be about to change. So, if you run an office-based business, you may well want to consider upgrading to touch screens sooner rather than later.

Why? Read on.

It’s All About the Kids…

It is a fact that the young people who will join your company in the years to come will all have grown up using touch screen devices like smartphones and tablets. The chances are that they will see non-touch screen computers as being somewhat outdated options. After all, they will be used to reaching out and simply touching an application to get it started, so double-clicking and scrolling with a mouse will seem quite unnecessary and unnatural.

Increased Efficiency

Of course, it is much quicker to touch an application than it is to navigate a cursor and click a mouse to open it. In fact, opening and closing multiple applications in this way can add up to quite a bit of lost time over the course of a day. Using a touch screen can help employees to use their time more effectively – and therefore be more productive.

Comfort is Key

Sitting in the same position all day at the same workstation is uncomfortable and unhealthy. Indeed, many office workers develop back and neck problems – as well as other conditions such as repetitive strain injury – because of the way they are forced to work on desktop PCs. Installing touch screen monitors alongside a traditional mouse and keyboard set-up will help to alleviate these concerns as it will encourage workers to change their position more frequently.

Time to upgrade..?

Using touch screens in education

These days technology is a core part of education. The right equipment can be used to further learning and add an extra element to the classroom, with children benefiting in the long-term as well as the short—a knowledge of technology is essential in this ever-changing environment, so not only can the right equipment be an essential learning tool it can set children up for the future as well. One piece of kit that’s been rapidly gaining ground recently is the touch screen, with these monitors offering a huge number of benefits for any educational setting.

The advantages of the touch screen PC in a school environment

Touch screens can be a vital tool in your quest to improve the educational environment. They can enrich the learning experience like nothing else can, being a great way to aid learning as a whole and improve the lives of students in the process, and they could easily lead to better results—if students are more engaged they’ll be more receptive, and with things like interactive whiteboards being used to great effect you could soon notice the difference.

There are particular benefits in a special needs environment too. Touchscreens allow information to be displayed in a much more visual manner, and the ease at which they can be used means children with cognitive or physical disabilities might find it easier to interact. Using touchscreens can be an easier, more interactive method of learning than needing to contend with a mouse or pen and paper, for example, and it can allow easier communication too—children with verbal difficulties will be able to connect with teachers and peers through touch screen technology, allowing them to engage much more easily.

In many cases touch screens are being utilised so early on that they’re becoming a core part of a child’s education. Children are being exposed to this kind of technology at such a young age that it’s something that becomes natural to them, with these pieces of kit being highly regarded and well-established educational tools. Quite simply, if you haven’t used touch screen technology in your educational environment yet you’re falling behind with modern requirements and could actually be doing your students a disservice, so getting the products to suit should be high on the list of priorities.

Get the educational tools you need

If you’re looking for touch screen PCs that can have that kind of impact, you’ve come to the right place. Here at Distec we realise the benefits of touchscreens in a whole range of different environments but in an educational setting they can really come into their own, and with a great range of products to choose from you’re bound to find something that can suit your needs perfectly. With our help you could bring learning to life and offer a far more interactive and effective means of tuition, so make sure to get in touch to discuss the options and you could soon realise the benefits of using touchscreens in education for yourself.

Interactive Digital Signage IDS…

Interactive Digital Signage (IDS)

The Digital Age is well and truly here as a whole generation which has been brought up with the Internet comes of age. One of the biggest markets that has been influenced by the invention of the Internet is retail. Online retailers can set themselves up and start selling their products from anywhere in the world as long as they have an Internet connection. What is more, people are increasingly turning away from using bricks and mortar stores thanks to the ease and convenience factors offered by online shopping.

According to comScore, a leading researcher measuring consumer behaviour in the digital world, consumers are increasingly using the web to access retail stores. Indeed, comScore’s research suggests that digital retail sales has increased as much as 111 percent compared to the Christmas 2010 holiday period. Johanne Conforme is the Executive Creative Director of the internationally renowned ad agency Ogilvy Mather. His job involves coming up with new ways of using digital media to attract the attention of normal consumers.

“We’re in a brand new world when it comes to interacting with the average consumer. Consumers in the 18 to 35 age range barely remember a time before the Internet, if they remember it at all,” says Conforme. “For these consumers, the idea that they are able to point and click and purchase the items they want or need instantly is second nature.”

“We are now entering a state where people are moving around and moving away from their computers and into the world,” he explains. “But because of smartphones, a lot of the interaction we’re having with our environment is still digital.”

If traditional retailers want to keep afloat in the modern world they are going to have to find a way of engaging consumers with their own digital content. The widespread use of touch screens and smart phones means that it is now easier for consumers to access the goods that they want, when they want, at any time. One way of doing this is through Interactive Digital Signage (IDS).

One hugely successful example of IDS usage was a scheme run by the South Korean grocer Home Plus (aka Tesco, as it is known elsewhere in the world). They came up with an idea to capture the market during their customers’ commutes. In 2011 they launched a pilot program which projected virtualised images of the company’s goods onto the walls of Seoul subway stations. Thanks to the touch screen PC technology which is employed on many people’s phones, commuters could then order goods through their smart phones and find the goods waiting on their doorsteps when they got home from work.

According to Conforme, this interaction shows the beauty of IDS. He says, “These consumers needed groceries, right? But IDS gives you the ability to do what you set out to do in a completely different way.”

If things go to plan, it won’t be too long until such pilot schemes become the norm and we all shop from touch screens.

Touch Screens Enable Android to Enter the Desktop Market…

Touch Screens Enable Android to Enter the Desktop Market?

It is well known that the new Windows 8 operating system is specifically designed to run at optimum levels whilst using touch screen technology, to the extent that we are already seeing huge developments in the touchscreen PC market. However, whilst this may be incredibly good news for the Microsoft giants, it could be great news for Google too. The search engine giant has long been looking for a way to crack into the computer desktop market which is dominated by their Microsoft and Apple counterparts. However, the rise of touch screen monitors means that it will be easier for Google to move their Android mobile operating system to the computer desktop territory.

Intel has made their views clear on touch screen PC technology by announcing that it will be an essential requirement of any of their future notebook computers which want to use the name Ultrabook. Another

Intel made it clear in Las Vegas that it solidly supports touchscreens coming to PCs by requiring the technology in any future notebook. Indeed, as touch screens become the norm in PC technologies, Android has a far greater chance of obtaining a beachhead on the desktop. And if that happens then Google could pose a serious threat to Microsoft’s dominance. Millions of people use Android phones and tablets worldwide, and would be familiar with the likely interfaces that the Google giant would implement in such circumstances.

All the computer technology giants see the benefits of having one operating system which spans multiple platforms such as notebooks, desktops, tablets, and smart phones. Whilst Microsoft has long established itself as the mass market choice in notebooks and desktops, Android has stolen a lead in the tablet and smart phone arenas. This is not through a lack of effort on Microsoft’s part as they have invested significant amounts of money in trying to market their smart phone and tablet products.

However, all is not necessarily bleak for Microsoft. Google’s Chrome notebooks have not really lit the public’s imagination and sales have been weak. It must be pointed out though that Chromebooks are not based on Android operating systems which would be a lot more familiar to people. A truer test of the demand for Google desktops will only be able to be properly judged when they release an Android operated product.

There are signs which suggest that Google may enter the desktop market down the line. The company filed for a patent last year which mapped Android touchscreen gestures to a trackpad. Whilst this patent would become irrelevant when touchscreen PCs become standard, it could be taken as a sign of a potential market change in the future.

There are some industry observers who think that a lot of hardware makers are fed up with paying royalties to Microsoft for the Windows system. Such people may jump at the chance of using Android systems instead. One thing is for certain, touch screen PCs are both the present and the future of desktop computer technologies.
